Get into the Surfing Champions Trophy vibe with double winner, Taj Burrow, before this year’s event (6–12 August 2018)
Right after his second consecutive Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy victory last August, Australian Taj Burrow took a little time out from Sultans perfect 3-to-4 foot waves to highlight why he can’t wait to return to Four Seasons Resort Kuda Huraa this year to go for the hat trick in the ‘world’s most luxurious surfing event’.
“This is such an amazing event, I would have retired earlier if I knew this is what life would be like, it’s too good,” commented the famed aerial innovator, who usually travels to Kuda Huraa with his wife and daughter. “I’m so stoked I get to come back here after a win in both 2016 and 2017, we get so spoiled at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa and then to come just around the corner and have waves that are this good is such a treat, it’s an incredible place. Winning again was really special to me.”
Burrow posted huge scores across all three divisions to qualify for last year’s Grand Final. He was always going to be tough to beat, having only retired from the elite WSL Championship Tour (CT) two years ago. Taj fought off stiff competition from Rob Machado and eventual runner-up, C.J. Hobgood, as well as Brazilian big wave inspiration Maya Gabeira, powerhouse Ross Williams and three-time Maldivian National Champion, Ismail Miglal.
And (after a slightly shaky start) even the weather came up trumps … “The waves were cooking for this whole event,” the Double Surfing Champions Trophy winner continues. “The forecast wasn’t looking great so to score the waves we did was sick. Everyone in this event surfs so amazingly I really had to surf out of my skin to win this thing. If I do get to come back next year I’ll be over the moon. It’s definitely one of the sickest events on the planet.”
Will he be able to hold on to his title for an unprecedented third time this coming August? Only the waves know what this year’s event will hold, but if previous years are anything to go by, it’s set to be an epic battle – with plenty of land-based action too.
